Transistors were invented in 1948 and made their break through during the 1960s when they replaced radio tubes in our radios. The older travel radio with its power-hungry electron tubes and dual batteries was replaced by the smaller transistor radio which was cheaper to run since the batteries lasted longer. These devices became immensely popular particularly on the beach.
